Brendan
Kane is NEH Keough Fellow for 2004-2005.
Brendan received his B.A. in history from the University
of Rochester, focusing on European history. His honors
thesis looked at Irish Famine migrants in England. This
interest in Irish-English comparative history led him to
the National University of Ireland, Galway, where he
completed an M. Phil. in Irish Studies. His thesis - a
comparative study of the 1641 rebellion in a planted
county (King's/Offaly) and a non-planted one (Kildare) -
was awarded a First Class Honours degree and is
presently being reworked for publication. Brendan was
awarded a scholarship by NUI, Galway in 1997 to attend a
three-week immersion program at Áras Mháirtín Uí
Chadhain, An Ceathrú Rua, County Galway, Ireland to work
on his Irish. Coming back to the States to enroll as a
Ph.D. student at Princeton, he sought a dissertation
topic that would allow him not only to work on
Irish-English comparative history, but also to make use
of English- and Irish-language source material. The
resulting thesis explores the politics of honor in early
modern Ireland and England, 1541-1641, and was completed
in April, 2004. A case study taken from his dissertation
research has recently appeared in Foilsiú, an
interdisciplinary journal of Irish Studies. Brendan will
spend the bulk of the year at the Keough Institute
turning his dissertation into a book.

These pictures were taken
on 11/01/03 at the Oley Valley Turnpike Dairy. It was an
absolutely gorgeous day as you can see - no jackets or even long
sleeves necessary. We were there with the Brendan, Sandy,
Eoin, Gavin and Sandy's sister Pam and her son. The picture
all the way to the left is Sandy, Eoin and Gavin on the hay-ride
about to get a gourd from a man in a cow-suit. |

Two boys!
Eoin
- pronounced "Owen" - born 11/11/98, and was walking after 9
months. I talked to Brendan on 10/05/04, who called from South
Bend, Indiana. He said that Eoin is presently very into Ice
Hockey.
Gavin - born 9/09/02. Gavin was
born at home naturally - Sandy is apparently very pain tolerant and
brave! He was 8 pounds, 21" at birth. |

Update from Brendan 3/26/04: "I'm
teaching full time at ol' PU and have to submit my dissertation, all
500+ pages of it, by April 1 so that I can defend in May! So I've been
out of my mind. We're off to Indiana in August since I got a
post-doc fellowship at Notre Dame. Go Fighting Irish!"
Brendan has earned a B.A. in History from the
University of Rochester and an M.Phil. in Irish Studies from the
National University of Ireland, Galway. He is working
towards a PhD in 17th Century British History (all the really esoteric
subjects were taken. :o)

In early 2003, the following was found on the
"University Center of Human Values" section of the Princeton
University website, under "What's New"...
"Brendan Kane is a fifth-year student
in History. His dissertation investigates honor in early modern England
and Ireland. Honor operates as a nexus between individual and collective
values and expectations. By focusing on codes of honor and their uses in
English and Gaelic culture, Kane's work attempts to go beyond the
institutional focus of most histories of this period to reconstruct
better the texture of human interaction in this early modern colonial
environment. He earned a B.A. in History from the University of
Rochester and an M.Phil. in Irish Studies from the National University
of Ireland, Galway."
More of Brendan on the Internet...
On the Princeton 2003
"Research Seminar Schedule" is "Brendan Kane, Princeton University, 'The
Beauty of Virtue: Honor in Early Modern England and Ireland.'"In the Princeton Colloquium
archives is Fall 2001 series "Schedule of Talks" which includes "Honor and
Nobility in Greville's Life of Sidney and O'cleirigh's Life of Red Hugh O
Dombnaill" by Brendan Kane (Department of History).
At the "Middle Atlantic
Conference of British Studies" held at the CUNY Graduate Center in NYC,
Brendan spoke Saturday, 4/06/02, on "Stafford, Ireland and the Politics of
Honor."

This was also read at the Pacific Coast Conference on
British Studies Annual Meeting, 4/5/02 at Pomona College, Claremont,

At the 23rd Annual Harvard Celtic
Colloquium, held on 10/10/03, Brendan spoke on "Gaelic Honor and the Nine
Years War (1593-1603)." This paper explores the role played by
concerns over honor during the Nine Years War (1593-1603), a conflict
considered to mark the end of the Gaelic order. As the Gaelic legal and
literary traditions demonstrate, notions of honor were central to medieval
Gaelic society. But could honor serve as a frame through which Gaelic
elites could understand and negotiate Tudor centralization? Through a
reading of poetry, annals, and State Papers this paper suggests that
despite the emergence of a 'faith and fatherland' ideology during the war,
honor imperatives played a central role in shaping its tenor and
trajectory.

Spring of 2003, Brendan was listed on the
The Irish American Club at the College of New Jersey's website on their
Spring 2003 calendar of events: 2/14/03, "Irish Studies at Princeton
University, Panel I: The BGackwards Look, with Brendan Kane, Natasha
Tessone and Abby Bender."
http://www.tcnj.edu/~iaclub/princetonlecture.htm The BBC did a feature on Notre Dame
University and Notre Dame's Keough Institute for Irish Studies, which
included a 10-minute video which was viewable
from the BBC website. "...In this
feature, Michelle speaks to some of the students including Cheman Roy
from Hawaii and Breandán Ó Catháin from Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. She is
introduced to Criostóir Mac an tSionnaigh, founder and director of the
institute and Éamonn Ó Ciardha from Monaghan, a history lecturer who is
advisor to those learning Irish at the university." Yes, that's
our Breandán Ó Catháin (a.k.a. Brendan Kane).
CLICK HERE (http://www.bbc.co.uk/northernireland/realmedia/irish/srl/notre_dame.ram)
to watch the video. Brendan can be seen for a couple brief seconds
around 1:25, and then is interviewed for a lengthy segment (although not
long enough for my tastes!) starting at around 4:50. |

STUDENTS MERIT HONORS
Everyone likes to accept a
challenge, and the students at Mt. Penn are no exception. Brendan
Kane and Christine Jurasinski, two of our seniors, have risen
to a challenge. Brendan and Christine have made the top 5% of students
across the United States on the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying
Test taken last October.
The NMSQT is the PSAT test. The judges use a selection
index, which is twice the verbal score plus the math score, to rate the
test takers.
Of the 1 million taking the test, 50,000 are honored
for their performance. Both Brendan and Christine have received
commendation from the Merit Scholarship Board. Last year our 3 merit
honor winners received scholarships based on their performance. Brendan
and Christine will also be eligible for nationwide scholarships for
their high scores.

MYSTERY STUDENT
Throughout the 1985-86 school year, each issue of the
Penn Post will contain an article on a mystery student. The mystery
student is chosen at random by the Penn Post staff. The mystery
student's name will be revealed in the following issue.
This issue's mystery student is a senior male who
enjoys playing soccer, among other sports. He has black hair and hazel
eyes. Two of his many hobbies are listening to music and being with his
friends. This student's favorite teacher is Miss Luckenbach and his
favorite class is calculus. He has been quoted as saying, "Peter is the
master." Can you guess who this mystery student is? Look for it in the
next issue.

| Chris Mal Notes: |
Brendan was living in Ireland around
the time of the 10 year reunion - he was going to school over there. He
and Sandy were married near the end of the summer of '95 and a few
months later were off to Ireland for two years. They were married in
Sandy's Parents' back-yard up in the mountain - very nice setting. Greg
Tucci was the best-man. Brendan was in shorts. Kathy Ford and I were the
lone representatives from the class of '86. It was a very cool wedding.
As of August 2000, Brendan was working his way towards a PhD in 17th
Century British History centering on Ireland. He was on his way to
spending another month in Ireland in the Fall of 2000. Sandy is working
for IBM.
Brendan and I spent a lot of time doing a lot of crazy things - many
hours trying to kill ourselves climbing random cliffs up in Neversink
Mountain - many more hours playing Dungeons and Dragons - and even more
hours playing video games both on my Atari 800 and pumping quarter after
quarter into machines at R&R games.
Brendan was responsible for my high school musical infatuation over
Peter Gabriel.
Proving how peculiar I was in high school, I formed the "Chris
Malinowski" Fan Club and elected Brendan as Vice President.
Laura Schnader was the treasurer, and Cori Roboski named herself "Incompetent
Secretary."
After exchanging a couple letters after he
and Sandy left for Ireland right after their wedding, I didn't hear from
Brendan again for about six years. Then, one day, I was eating
lunch at
Taco Bell and who sat down right next to me but Julie Hyman! As it
turns out, her husband was VERY good friends with Brendan when they were
much younger. In
fact, Julie and her husband took a trip to Ireland and they met with the
Kanes while they were there. How odd is it that Julie and Brendan
didn't see each other for 10 years (since graduation) and then, the next
time they do, it's in Ireland. Anyway, she gave me Brendan's phone
number and the next thing you know, Brendan, Sandy, Bev and I met for brunch at
Arner's in January
2001. (By the way, their little boy, Eoin, is absolutely adorable.)
On May 15th, 2001, Sandy Horning spilled something on her head.
On May 20th, 2001, Brendan, Sandy, Eion and I went to the Laurel Run
Railroad to ride the train. Eoin likes Tigers, but isn't fond of
sharks or crabs.
Brendan's sister, Andrea, has done a couple songs for Blues Clues.
Brendan and I went to see Ben Folds at the TLA on
Tuesday, 6/04/02. While there we met a woman who used to be an actress,
but now gives oriental massages (as opposed to "normal" ones.)
She told us that he and I ought to be stand up comedians.
Randy Boyer went to visit Brendan in June of
2002. They went to see a bike race in Philly. But wait, this is the
wild part...Randy rode HIS bike all the way from Reading to
Brendan's house in Narberth. Very manly.
5/29/04, I attended a PhD party in honor of Brendan who defended his
dissertation earlier in the month, graduated from Princeton with his
Ph.D. and arrived in Indiana in August 2004 to teach at Norte Dame. Julie (Hyman) Singer, her husband Fred and their
two kids were also at the party.
