Inspirational Player of the Week:
Steve Ostrowski.  According to Steve, "We pretty much stunk up the joint in the first game.  We were up like 9-2.  They tied it.  We went up by about 5 or maybe 7 with 2 innings left.  We shit it away.  I had to be the calming influence in game 2.  Pete would have felt much shame had he lost 2 games as manager in your (Chris Mal's) absence.  I saved him.  For that I should be voted 'Most Inspirational Player of the Week' for getting the team to rally behind me."

Honorable Mention:
Chris Hunter was 4-for-6 in the first two games against Reinholds despite tearing his knee cap in his first at bat of the day ... Jeff Harlow was 3-for-6 with a solo homer against Reinholds ... Steve Ostrowski was 4-for-6 against Ozgood's.  None of these three were above .500 for the entire day, however.

Game Notes:
With five players missing to a tournament in Drifton, three other players in a tournament at Zinn's, Mike Capilo out with a bashed in face after getting hit with a ball earlier in the week, J.C.Casner Equipment struggled to field a team let alone score runs.  With only 11 players, matters were made worse by the fact that temperatures reached almost 100 degrees.

Making matters worse than worse, on his very first at bat of the day, Chris Hunter twisted his knee running the bases.  An MRI revealed a tear in his knee cap.  He will be out of action for 2-3 weeks.  And in the 3rd inning of Game #4, Jeff Harlow pulled his hamstring playing rightfield.  Making matters worse than worse than worse, these were Jeff Petersen's last games EVER.  His chronic knee problems continue to give him pain.  In defense against his eventual need for a knee replacement, Jeff has decided to hang it up for good.

Game #1:  Chris Hunter, Jeff Harlow and Dickie Delp had seven hits combined.  The other 8 players in the line-up had only FIVE hits combined.  Yuck.

Game #2:  Jeff Petersen and Darren Max each had two hits.  The other nine hitters had only EIGHT hits COMBINED (8-for-27, .296).  Yuck.

Game #4:  Although we had 18 hits as a team, we had exactly ZERO extra-base hits.  EIGHTEEN singles.

For the entire day, only three people were out of the asterisks - the three people you see above as "Stars of the Day."  On the bright side, Steve Julian hit the ball VERY well although he didn't have much to show for it, and he threw in some impressive defensive plays as well.

Scott Metcalfe and Mac Zeigler played in these games despite not being on our roster.  Scott played as "Paul Rosa" and Mac played as "Bob Pettitt."

Darren Max (2-for-3, walk, 2 runs)
Mike Zalegowski (3-for-5, 2-run HR, 3 RBI, 3 runs)

Mike Capilo:
Of Mike Capilo's FIVE home runs on the day, three of them were consecutive in his first three at bats of the day.  Without a doubt, all five would have cleared the fence at any fenced-in park.  He now leads the team with 14 home runs on the year.  His 5th home run of the day broke the team record for home runs in a season, previously held by Randy Boyer (1998).

Mike also had an impressive TWELVE runs batted in, which gives him the team lead with 36.  His only out on the day in nine trips to the plate was a deep fly-ball to left-field.

Best Attempted Bunt of the Day:
Pete Gabrielli was awarded "Best Attempted Bunt of the Day."

12 Runs in One Inning:
We scored TWELVE runs in the first inning of Game #2, despite having only six hits!  The inning went like this:  Gabrielli double, E-3, Capilo walk, Casner 2-RBI double, Boyer RBI-single, Barzd walk, Max walk, E-3, Julian 2-RBI single, Peterson sac-fly, E-5, FC6-4, Hunter walk, Capilo 3-run HR, Casner single, F-9.  That's 6 hits, 4 walks and 3 errors.  Yikes.

Dan Nosti:
Dan Nosti played for Randal Badinger and was 0-for-3 in the first game.  Dan is the younger brother of Drew Nosti who played with us on Sundays from 1994 thru 1997.

John Casner's Only Out:
John Casner's only out was in his last at-bat of the day when he batted left-handed and popped out to shortstop.  By the way, I know that's not really John Casner's picture, but actually that IS really John Casner.  Click on the picture to see what I mean!

Jeff Petersen walk
Dickie Hamilton single (w/E7)
Steve Ostrowski RBI-single
Steve Julian double
Butch Miller RBI single (w/E8)
Darren Max RBI single (w/E9)

Fans of the Year
The "Fans of the Year" were on hand including Chris Hunter's daughter and her friends who brought more team spirit to the game than all the spectators we've had for the last 10 years.

Virtuous Player of the Week
Steve Ostrowski was awarded "Most Virtuous Player of the Week" honors.  He was honest enough to point out that it seemed like his average went up TOO much and that I should recheck it.  Sure enough, I did give him an extra hit last week.  To which Steve commented: "I need to be voted 'Most Virtuous Player of the Week.'  Chicks dig a virtuous player I've heard."

Tom Barzd's day:
Single, double, F-7, single, double, single, double - all of them were hit hard.

Pete must be butter because he's on a roll:
Pete now has 21 hits in his last 24 at bats (.875), and is 15-for-his-last-15 in the first game of the day.  That was good enough to give Pete "star-of-the-day" honors for three consecutive weeks.  He was 4-for-4 in Game #1, and 3-for-5 in Game #2.

The Home runs for the day:
John Casner (#5)

Standings:
This split brought the team's record to 11-5, only two games out of first, but in 4th place behind Richland Legion (12-2), Fantilli Exterior (13-3) and Ozgood's (10-4).

Penn Avenue's record after these games was 6-8, which put them in 7th place.

Random Notes:
Not surprisingly, Pete leads the team with a .776 on-base percentage.  But who is second?  Carl Rudolph at .704.  Carl has been on base 19 times in just 27 plate appearances including 11 hits, a team-leading 5 walks, and has been safe on three errors.

My wrist is seriously black-and-blue after taking a line-drive one-hopper off of it.

Pete didn't slide into third, and later didn't slide into home.

Penn Avenue Music highlights:
Josh Ressler, who played with some of us in the Fall League, was 7-for-7 with a walk and three doubles for Penn Avenue.  Renny Kohler and Bill Ulrich were also on our Fall teams at various points in time.  Renny was 3-for-8 with a double, Bill was 2-for-5 with a double.

John Ressler was 2-for-6 with a triple.

The Home runs for the day:

Mike Capilo (#8)

Standings:
This clutch sweep of Fantilli's was HUGE.  It was Fantilli's 2nd and 3rd losses of the year, bringing their record to 11-3.  Our record after the games was 10-4, taking us into third place, just one game behind both Fantilli's (11-3) and Richland Legion (10-2).

Fantilli connections:
Erik Strauss, who played with some of us in the Fall League, and who was also in our NL-Rotisserie baseball league for a couple of years, was 6-for-8 with a double and a home run for Fantilli Exterior.

Overall Summary / Colleen Boyer Gives Birth:
Chris Yeagley was 6-for-8 with a pair of home runs for Richland Legion, while Pete Gabrielli was 6-for-6 with a pair of solo home runs for J.C.Casner.  Superstar pitching extrodinaire Chris Malinowski was 3-for-3 with a pair of walks.  Meanwhile, Randy Boyer's wife, Colleen, had their first baby - Randal James Boyer - who was spanked at 9:30 a.m., just 30 minutes before J.C. Casner was spanked by Richland Legion.

As a team we batted just .404 (23-for-57) - Yuck.  Three people didn't even have ONE hit all day, one person fouled out, and another swung and missed at a pitch.  Only four people were over .500 for the day.  There were plenty of errors on the field, as well.  It was not a pretty morning.

The Home runs for the day:
Pete Gabrielli, 2 (#3, #4)
John Casner, 2 (#3, #4)

Standings:
These were two painful losses, as it brought Richland Legion's record to 8-2, and dropped ours to 8-4.  At the same time, Fantilli's extended their first place lead by sweeping Penn Avenue Music in a QUADRUPLE HEADER - yes, they played each other FOUR times - bringing their record to 11-1.
